Copy select content from one Canvas course to another

In some instances, you may want to copy specific content from one Canvas course to another. For example, you may want to copy a general Q & A discussion board or a syllabus quiz. Use the steps outlined below to assist you in copying select content from one Canvas course to another.

  1. Log in to the Canvas course site where you want the content to reside. Typically, this will be a course for the new term or semester.
  2. Click on Settings from the left-hand course navigation menu.
Left-hand course navigation menu in Canvas is show with the Settings link selected.
  3. Click on Import Course Content from the menu located on the far-right hand side of the page. (Note: Depending on the size of your browser window, this option may be located at the bottom of the page).
Right-hand menu displays Import Course Content option surrounded by a red box for emphasis.
  4. Use the drop-down menu for Content Type to select Copy a Canvas Course.
  5. Begin typing the name of the course site that contains the actual content. If you want to copy a course from a previous semester, make sure you check the Include completed courses box. As you type in the Search for a course text field, a list of course options will populate. Select the appropriate course once the name appears in the list.
  6. Choose Select specific content. You have the opportunity to choose the actual content in step 10.
The Select specific content option is toggled.
  7. Select Adjust events and due dates if you want Canvas to automatically adjust dates in the new course.
    1. Choose Shift dates to have Canvas automatically alter the dates. You have the ability to use the calendar icons to indicate the new beginning and end dates for the new course.
    2. Choose Remove dates to have Canvas remove events and due dates in the new course. You can manually add dates back to any necessary content once the import is complete.
Shift dates option is selected for Date adjustment. The original beginning date is January 15, 2018 with the new beginning date changed to January 14, 2019. The original ending date is May 20, 2018 with the new ending date changed to May 19, 2019.
  8. Click the blue Import button.
  9. Click the blue Select Content button located on the right-hand side of the page under Current Jobs.
Under the Current Jobs list, the Course Copy indicates "Waiting for Selection" with a blue Select Content button.
  10. Select the content to copy.
    1. To bring all instances of a particular content type over, tick the box next to the appropriate content type. In the example below, the course has 12 Discussion Topics. To copy all 12 discussions, tick the box next to Discussion Topics.
The Select Content menu opens showing the various content types in the course. The checkbox next to Discussion Topics (12) is selected.
    2. To bring over only particular items within a content type, click the arrow next to the content type. A drop-down menu appears allowing you to select which specific items to copy. In the example below, only the General Questions Discussion Board is selected for copy.
The menu containing Discussion Topics (12) is open with a check next to General Questions Discussion Board.
  11. Click the blue Select Content button when the appropriate content has been selected.

The blue Select Content button is shown next to the gray Cancel button.

Your import request will be added to the Current Jobs list. Once the import is finished, you will see a Completed status listed next to the job.
Current Jobs list now indicates the copy of select content is Completed.
