Copy a Canvas course to a new Canvas course site
From time to time, it may be necessary to copy an already built Canvas course to a new/blank Canvas course site. Often, this need arises when copying content from a sandbox site in Canvas to a live course site in Canvas or when copying a course site from a previous semester to a new semester. To copy a Canvas course yourself, use the steps outlined below:

  1. Log in to the Canvas course site where you want the content to reside. Typically, this will be a course for the new term or semester.
  2. Select Settings from the left-hand course navigation menu.

Left-hand course navigation menu in Canvas is show with the Settings link selected.

  3. Select Import Course Content from the menu located on the far-right hand side of the page. (Note: Depending on the size of your browser window, this option may be located at the bottom of the page).

Right-hand menu displays Import Course Content option surrounded by a red box for emphasis.

  4. Use the drop-down menu for Content Type to select Copy a Canvas Course.

Content Type drop-down menu displays the option to Copy a Canvas Course as the first option from the list.

  5. Begin typing the name of the course site that contains the actual content. If you want to copy a course from a previous semester, make sure you check the Include completed courses box. As you type in the Search for a course text field, a list of course options will populate. Select the appropriate course once the name appears in the list.

Select the correct course from the list that populates as you type in the Search for a course field.

  6. Select All content to copy everything in the course. You also have the option to copy only specific aspects of a course. For instructions on copying specific content, please see Copy select content from one Canvas course to another.

The toggle button for All content is selected for the Content option.

  7. Select Adjust events and due dates if you want Canvas to automatically adjust dates in the new course.
    1. Choose Shift dates to have Canvas automatically alter the dates. You have the ability to use the calendar icons to indicate the new beginning and end dates for the new course.
    2. Choose Remove dates to have Canvas remove events and due dates in the new course. You can manually add dates back to any necessary content once the import is complete.

Shift dates option is toggled for the Date adjustment option. Beginning date of the source course is August 13, 2018 and the new course date is being changed to January 14, 2019. The Ending date for the source course is December 16, 2018 and the new course's end date is changed to May 19, 2019.

  8. Select the blue Import button.

Your import request will be added to the Current Jobs list. Once the import is finished, you will see a Completed status listed next to the job.

Current Jobs queue is listed and the course copy of Jen Sackhoff Sandbox is listed as Completed.
