Overview
Caring for a sick newborn demands specialized skill and commitment. UMKC offers a neonatal nurse practitioner graduate program to educate leaders in newborn health care. The online program is focused on health management of the neonate and their family. However students will also graduate with a broad base of knowledge including nursing theory, research, cultural diversity, health policy, ethics and leadership related to the role of the advanced practice nurse. Graduates of the accredited program are qualified to sit for the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Board Exam offered by the National Certification Corporation.
Graduates take the national certification exam for their specialty and practice as a nurse practitioner in any area of the United States.

Program Structure
Delivery of this program is blended: You will complete most course work online, but on-campus visits are required. Courses are semester-based. Full-time students may take three courses per semester and finish in two years. Part-time students may take one or two courses per semester and finish in three years.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States.
On-campus residencies are required for the online programs. Faculty will provide more information prior to each scheduled on-campus residency which occurs during your clinical course work. Online course work may require synchronous online class times. These dates are scheduled in advance and communicated on the schedule for the semester.
Successful completion of the program requires 45 credit hours of course work.

How to Apply
Fulfill the admission requirements
BSN from a college or university nationally recognized by a nursing accrediting agency (CCNE or AACN).
The GPA required for admission is a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (calculated on the last 60 hours of their BSN degree).
Current unencumbered Missouri licensure or unencumbered licensure in the state in which the student completes clinical requirements.
The following two courses are prerequisites to progression in the MSN and DNP program; however they can be taken at UMKC along with your program of study in the first semester (it is strongly recommended to complete prior to applying).
Graduate level statistics course with a minimum grade of B and a free-standing undergraduate health assessment course which needs to be completed in the first Summer Session or Fall Semester with a minimum grade of B.
Personal interviews are required.
Applicants must have the equivalent of 2 years of full-time clinical practice experience (within the last 5 years) as an RN in the care of critically ill neonates or infants with the majority of experience being in a level III or level IV NICU.
