Online Student Authenticationwith Biometric Signature ID
Why is identity verification necessary?
Section 602.17 of the re-authorized Education Act of 2008 now requires an institution that offers distance education to have a process through which the institution establishes that the student who registers in a distance education course or program is the same student who participates in the program and receives the academic credit.
To meet these new requirements/recommendations and use a software solution that will maintain the highest academic fraud and integrity levels, the University of Missouri-Kanas City has contracted with Biometric Signature ID (BSI) to deploy gesture biometrics technology to authenticate student identity remotely.
What is BioSig-ID?
The BioSig-ID software system is used to verify a student’s ID using just a mouse, touchpad, stylus, or touch screen. No special hardware or software downloads are necessary. This identification technology is from a company called Biometric Signature ID (BSI).
Beginning in summer of 2017, students in select online programs will be asked to create a biometric password using BioSig-ID. During BioSig-ID enrollment, a photo-ID verification step will take place that requires a webcam for video and a microphone and speakers to speak with the live agent.
After creating their BioSig-ID password, students will be asked to validate their identity when they first log in to a Blackboard course. Instructions, resources, and support links for students are available on the student support page.
