Why do we love this feature?
Canvas makes it easy to automatically give zeros in the gradebook using due dates. This determines who did not submit the assignment and will automatically calculate a zero toward their final grade. Note that you can always override this score later if you accept a student’s assignment after the due date has passed.
Why should I set this?
Every cell in the Canvas grade center should have a number or value. If you do not enter a grade in a student’s gradebook column, Canvas will ignore the assignment in their final grade calculation.
If you set the late policy at the end of the semester or after the submission date has passed, you will need to manually enter a ‘0’ in that column.
How do you do this?
- Open your Canvas course.
- Select Grades in the left-hand course menu.
- Select the wheel or gear icon in the upper, right-hand corner of the grade center. The Late Policies tab will now appear.
- Select automatically apply grade for missing submissions.
5. Enter 0% for the Missing Submission Grade.
- Canvas will now automatically insert a zero into any missing assignment cell after a due date has passed. Students will still be able to submit the assignment if it is left available to them.
